Duties/ Responsibilities

The incumbent will report to the Manager Information Technology Services 1(G27) and will be responsible for technical leadership of integrating and modifying the Unix Systems operational platforms into the agencies open systems enterprise architecture. The duties of the incumbent will include but not be limited to the following:

Install, implement, manage and support the IBM Power 6 systems Virtual Input/Output (VIO) Servers using Advanced Power Virtualization (APV) features. Utilize IBM live Partition Mobility function to transfer mission critical applications from one Power 6 server to another without system interruption and application outage.

Install, implement, manage and support Axway Secure Transport file exchange system across multiple operating system platforms including both inbound/outbound transfers to other state agencies and business partners with disparate systems; while maintaining compliance with HIPAA security requirements.

Support and maintain HP Storage Works Enterprise File Services Clustered Gateway.

Maintain and support hardware within mid-range and large scale UNIX-based servers, built upon both IBM and HP operating systems. Install, configure and support 3 different Unix software environments; AIX, HP-UX, and Linux operating systems.

Knowledge and experience installing, configuring, and administering UNIX utilities such as Samba, SSH and SUDO.

Support and manage the agencys IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for System Backup and Recovery on SysBack and Veritas NetBackup Enterprise products.

Administrator and configure IBM SAN Volume Controller Enterprise Storage Systems, and Fiber Storage Area Network (SAN) Infrastructure.

Experience installing, configuring, and administering Apache, Tomcat, JBoss, Web Logic, and Sun Java application servers.

Diagnose and troubleshoot system problems as they occur to eliminate or avoid system outages and any application downtime. Troubleshoot with vendor technical support to remedy system issues as required.

Plan and integrate new UNIX server hardware into existing system configurations.

Install, configure and maintain system management platform products. Including TPC Storage infrastructure and Acronis as well as third party software products Ganglia and Big Brother monitoring system.

Ensure Unix servers computing capacity resources are properly maintained, monitored, analyzed and evaluated in order to maintain peak performance, and to improve availability and performance.


Ensure all appropriate data and historical statistics on system performance are collected and maintained to enable accurate information for predicting future capacity needs. Experience with Ganglia, IBM Director and Big Brother system performance monitoring and analysis tools.

Work closely with other Operating Systems staff to analyze and define technical and infrastructure requirements for enterprise application development projects.

Publish and maintain written documentation including operational procedures, technical manuals and related records for other Technical Services and Data Center staff.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 6 years experience installing, configuring, and administrating IBM/AIX systems. Experience must include AIX 6.1 and 5.3

Minimum of 4 years experience with Server Virtualization Technologies, such as IBM Virtual Input/Output (VIO) Servers using Advanced Power Virtualization (APV).


Minimum of 4 years experience with administrating and configuring Enterprise Storage Systems (IBM DS8300, DS6800, SVC), Fiber SAN Infrastructures (Brocade Director Switches) and enterprise backup solutions. (VERITAS Enterprise Backup System)

Minimum of five 5 years experience with Korn shell and scripted systems utilities.
