Minimum Qualifications This title is non-competitive. No examination is necessary. However, you must still meet the minimum qualifications of the position. You must have four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems or an Associates degree in automotive or diesel repair technology. Substitution: Education as detailed as below may be substituted for a maximum of two years’ experience.
1) Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as BOCES, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year experience.
2) Graduation from a one year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
Duties Description Perform skilled mechanical work in the automotive repair shops in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, diesel powered, and alternative fuel self-propelled motor-driven equipment, and perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, constriction, and other equipment in the field. You may, under the direction of a higher-level maintenance supervisor and other related titles, diagnose and repair self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment. May supervise incarcerated individuals in performance of automotive maintenance tasks.
