Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:

You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; or Adirondack Park Agency and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows*:

Either A. Biologist 1 (Wildlife);

Or B. Biologist 1 (Aquatic), Biologist 1 (Ecology), Biologist 1 (Marine).

Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC

or

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or

Transfer Eligible under Section 70.1 - One year of permanent competitive service as a Biologist 2 (Aquatic), (Ecology), (Marine) or (Wildlife), SG23.

*If we do not have a viable eligible for this title and no more than three individuals interested from among the interested qualified candidates for this position, it may be possible to make a permanent appointment via non-competitive promotion.

Duties Description Provides oversight of all wildlife programs in the region which include nuisance wildlife response, threatened and endangered species conservation, sportsman education, management of big and small game species and public land management, including the bureau's Young Forest Initiative.
This position relates to the health and welfare of the citizens in Region 3, as well as those in adjoining regions in many ways. It is critical to monitoring for, and dealing with, wildlife diseases,
many of which have human health implications (e.g. avian influenza, rabies, CWD, etc.).

This manager is directly responsible for four Wildlife Management Areas encompassing more than 17,000 acres and one Unique Area of 103 acres. In addition, the Wildlife unit assists the Division of Lands and Forests in managing public use of over 200,000 acres of public lands in the region, including the 6,700-acre Stewart Reforestation Area. This area is especially popular with sportsman and annually receives more than 10,000 hunter visits during the fall and spring hunting season, requiring active management by wildlife staff. The manager also undertakes outreach to conservation partners, including the sporting community, local land trusts and conservation organizations.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 20 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
