Minimum Qualifications Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as a Principal Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 27.

Promotion Provisional Opportunity - Current qualified employees of the New York State Department of Health with one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/c service as an Associate Radiological Health Specialist or an Associate Radio physicist.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have eight to ten years of experience in a broad range of inspection experience inluding radiation producing equipment and radioactive materials. They will also have a minimum of two years of supervisory experience, and must have experience with complaints and allegations of facilities and individuals

Duties Description As the Chief of the Radioactive Materials section, the candidate will provide technical and supervisory direction to section staff on program issues, and ensure that radioactive materials licensing work is processed in a timely manner. They will develop and implement program goals and objectives, policies, procedures and strategies for planning, prioritizing and evaluating the various section programs. The incumbent develop staff training priorities and assist in the development of regulations and lead outreach efforts to obtain feed back from the affected licensees. They will be able to prepare regulatory guides used by licensees and make available on the Department's web page. The incumbent will also interact with federal, state and local agencies, and the public on environmental radiation issues; provide consultative services to local health agencies; be responsible for appropriate follow-up of medical mis-administrations and incidents/accidents involving radioactive materials. They will ensure that the incident database is up to date and items closed out in a timely manner. The candidate will represent the Department at annual meetings with the Organization of Agreement States and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding radioactive materials issues. Maintain liaison with the Radiological Health Advisory Committee.
