Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have substantial grand jury and trial experience; excellent writing skills; and experience investigating and prosecuting homicide cases and/or cases involving alleged law enforcement misconduct. All or some of the following experience is preferred: (1) three (3) or more years of management experience; (2) significant experience working with and in diverse communities and doing community outreach; and (3) policy development experience, including criminal justice policies.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office of the Attorney General be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced criminal prosecutor to serve as Chief of the Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit. The Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit was created in July 2015 in response to the issuance of an Executive Order by the Governor of the State of New York appointing the Attorney General as a special prosecutor “to investigate, and if warranted, prosecute certain matters involving the death of an unarmed civilian . . . caused by a law enforcement officer” and where “there is a significant question as to whether the civilian was armed and dangerous at the time of his or death.”

The Chief will lead the Unit which includes experienced homicide prosecutors and investigators throughout the State. The Chief will be based in New York City. The position will require some travel.
