Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications G14 - Bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences or a related field and one year of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

G18 – Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences or a related field and two years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master’s degree in physical sciences or a related field and one year of post-degree experience in the appropriate field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of environmental chemical laboratory analysis and NELAC standards, ability to work independently and develop methods for inorganic chemical analysis, and strong background in instrumental analysis. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as Thermo-Dionex Ion Chromatographs, Flow through Lachat colorimeter, and Mettler Toledo Titrator for analysis of common ions, disinfection by products, TKN, silicate, ammonia, and alkalinity. Experience in Microsoft Excel, Word, and writing laboratory reports and SOPs for internal and external inspections.

Duties Description The Research Scientist will perform chemical analysis for EPA-regulated inorganic analytes in drinking water, performance, and emerging inorganic contaminant samples using automated technologies; document analytical run parameters in accordance to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); report data into CLIMs database; assist in data reporting, review, revision of SOPs and reports for laboratory inspections; maintenance and ordering of laboratory equipment and supplies; maintain quality control charts for laboratory analyses; and will assist the Nuclear Chemistry section during nuclear drills, emergencies and surge events, including rapid screening of environmental samples for radioactive contamination.

Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required.
