Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State and board certification in general psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Must be eligible for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.

Duties Description As a member of a clinical treatment team of the Gender Services Unit, the Psychiatrist 2 is responsible for the psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals in the custody of the New York State prison system and secure-forensic treatment facilities who may identify as transgender, transsexual, or gender non-conforming. Treatment may include psychiatric examinations and assessments, evaluation for gender dysphoria, determine the need for and carry out consultations with specialty services, psychopharmacological approaches, as well as non-somatic psychotherapy. In most cases, direct clinical services will be provided through telemedicine, using state-of-the-art videoconferencing, from a Manhattan-based office location.

Responsible for completing the psychiatric section of the treatment plan and record. The incumbent is expected to work closely with the physicians who are responsible for specialty services and consult with other members of the patient’s treatment team.

Actively participates in discharge planning, including making recommendations for post-discharge treatment, including medication.

3. Continued employment as a Psychiatrist 2 is dependent upon current licensure to practice medicine in New York State and board certification in general psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Loss of licensure or board certification may result in removal from employment.

Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review - Prospective appointees will be: (1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs (2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks (3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR).

This position is eligible for the Downstate Adjustment of $3,026.
