Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. A viable eligible list may not exist in this location and NYSDOT may be authorized to make a provisional appointment at this location in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates appointed provisionally must take and pass the next available Civil Service exam and be reachable on the resulting eligibility list. In order to be considered for provisional appointment, candidates must meet the minimum requirements for taking the open-competitive Engineering Technician exam as follows: One year of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronic technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or survey, AND graduation from a high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority. Substitution for this would be either 18 semester credit hours or college coursework* in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics; or graduation from a high school technical program education program (recognized by the New York State Education Department as meeting acceptable program practices and standards) in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics. *If you are using the coursework substitution to meet the minimum qualifications, you must provide the name and location of the college and a list of courses you have successfully completed with the corresponding number of credit hours either by listing them in the remarks section of the paper application, or on a separate piece of paper.

Duties Description Engineering Technicians perform routine technical tasks including taking measurements, checking computations, collecting and compiling data, reducing notes, tracing maps and plans, making simple calculations and performing inspections of small and relatively simple projects or portions of projects. These tasks may be performed at a field location with a bridge inspection team or work with an inspection or survey party, or in a drafting room, office or laboratory. Engineering Technicians may work with equipment used in surveying activities and assist with observations, inspections, laboratory tests, and report preparation. they may also assist in monitoring environmental quality, and use various computer applications in the performance of their duties. Responsibilities may also include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
