Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have one year of permanent, competitive or 55b/c service as a Legal Assistant 1 OR
For reinstatement purposes, previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title eligible for transfer on a permanent competitive basis OR
Be in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law OR
Be eligible to transfer under Section 70.4 Of the Civil Service Law
Candidates must have an associate’s degree (or higher) in a paralegal/legal assistant program OR a certificate in a paralegal/legal assistant program where either the degree or certificate was granted from a regionally accredited college or university, or college or university accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) or one approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).
The position may also be filled at the trainee level by appointment of a candidate reachable on the Legal Assistant Trainee list or in a title eligible to transfer to Legal Assistant Trainee 1. If filled as a trainee, the selected candidate must successfully complete a two-year traineeship. Trainees will be required to successfully complete courses in specific areas, in addition to on-the-job training activities, prior to completing the traineeship. All trainees are required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college or university. In addition, one or more college or training courses in writing skills will be required.
Duties Description The Legal Assistant 1 will perform duties in support of the Office of Employee Relations/ Labor Relations Unit as assigned, including, but are not limited to:
1. Assists in researching and analyzing law sources, arbitration decisions, court decisions and settlement agreements where precedent may be expected;
2. Prepares/assembles documents such as arbitration briefs and settlement agreements for review and approval by Human Resource Specialists;
3. Assists with investigations into Labor Relations issues including disciplinary actions, workplace violence incidents, and grievance matters including reviewing case materials for lines of questioning during interrogations;
4. Assists Human Resource Specialists with Hearing preparations including compiling and tabulating investigative materials and data, witness preparation, and managing exhibits;
5. Maintains case tracking system;
6. Oversees the process of opening and closing files and cases.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel, overtime and overnight travel may be required.
