Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Social Work with at least five (5) years of experience providing crime victims services at a non-profit organization or law enforcement/government agency. The selected candidate also will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be highly organized, able to work independently and as part of a team, knowledgeable of the NYS criminal justice system, and able to work with constituents, community and advocacy groups, and other government agencies. The ability to supervise social work students is also preferred.

Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) provides services and support to victims of crimes and their families across many practice areas of the office, including our investigations of certain civilian deaths caused by law enforcement, civil proceedings against sex offenders, and in connection with civil rights, labor and charities investigations and other non-criminal matters. The CVA Coordinator is tasked to provide direct support to crime victims and their families who engage with the OAG, assisting them to access critical information, services and assistance. The CVA Coordinator is also expected to provide leadership and support within the office and across New York State on issues relating to crime victims and their families, including engaging in community outreach and education. The CVA Coordinator will be located in New York City at the OAG’s main office.

The primary role of the CVA Coordinator will include, but not be limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

• Office-wide: to serve as the primary resource to OAG divisions, bureaus, units and employees for all matters related to crime victims and their families, such as
o supporting crime victims through direct interaction (as needed) and coordination of victim services;
o providing appropriate referrals for necessary medical and social services, such as counseling, treatment and support;
o educating crime victims about the criminal justice system and supporting them when they engage in that system; and,
o training OAG staff to support and engage crime victims effectively.
• Crime Victims Hotline: to manage and staff the hotline and provide the necessary resources and referrals to callers;
• Policy: to develop resources and policies to effectuate the OAG’s crime victims assistance goals and establish standard practices and procedures for all OAG relations with crime victims and their families;
• Agency Liaison: to serve as the OAG’s primary contact for crime victims advocacy groups and other law enforcement crime victim organizations and departments; and,
• Community outreach and education: to implement the OAG’s programs designed to raise public awareness on matters of importance to crime victims and their families.
