Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Applicants should have field experience and/or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biological/environmental sciences, natural resource management, or a related field. Sustainable trail design/construction, plant identification, natural history skills, and a working knowledge of GIS are desired. Highly qualified applicants will have experience with trail design, maintenance, and grant applications. Applicants should also have experience with environmental outreach, civic engagement, and coordination of volunteer programs.
Applicants must be able to work independently and be self-motivated. Applicants must be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions and perform physically demanding field work. Ability to hike five or more miles per day and to lift 40 pounds. Must also be comfortable working on a team and coordinating with upper level staff within the agency and partnering collegiate institutions. Applicants should possess excellent computing skills, verbal and written skills, and be able to think critically to assess the varying needs of the program.
Duties Description The Trail Crew Coordinator is a long term seasonal position that will assist the Thousand Islands Region of New York State Parks coordinate the Trail program and work of summer conservation crews.
Working directly with Regional Engineering and the Natural Resource Steward (Biologist), this position will oversee the work of the summer trails crew - designing projects, writing grants and overseeing construction/restoration- prioritizing projects and hiring & overseeing the trail crew (summer conservation crew) team. Summer conservation crew involvement ranges from one-day events to long-term projects that include improvements to recreation facilities and historic sites, trail rehabilitation, and the protection and restoration of natural resources, while learning organizational, leadership, communication, and professional skills, and experience that they can apply in their personal and professional lives.
Primary responsibilities require coordination and collaboration with; Park staff, Regional staff (capital and biologists) and Environmental Management staff and include but are not limited to:
• Working with the Regional Natural Resource Steward (Biologist) to develop plans to address priority projects throughout the region.
• Working with the State-Wide Trails Planner.
• Acting as a primary contact to write and apply for grants for various Trail projects.
• Acting as a primary contact to develop schedules and logistics with park managers for Summer conservation crews (both paid and volunteer) working in the parks.
• Applying sustainable trail building knowledge to lead the efforts of the regional trail crew on hiking trail projects in parks throughout the Thousand Islands Region.
• Assist with the development, implementation, and tracking of trail projects: meet with park managers and staff to discuss potential trail projects, collaborate with agency partners, research park-side protocol and feasibility for implementation of projects, and provide supervision, assistance, and leadership for projects.
Additional Comments Medical, Dental and Vision benefits are available after the 56-day waiting period for employees who work at least 20 hours/week. The option to join the NYS Employee Retirement System is also available. This is a seasonal position, however, funding will be requested to continue this program in future years, though future funding is not guaranteed.
