Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's Degree and satisfactory completion of a two-year traineeship, OR a Bachelor's Degree and two years of experience conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigation of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence; OR an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice and four years of experience conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence; OR six years of experience conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence. Candidates without the relevant experience but who possess a Bachelor's degree, will be appointed at the trainee 1 level.
All Revenue Crimes Specialist 1 candidates are required to meet physical, medical, and psychological standards. Candidates must submit to a complete background check including: credit, criminal history, tax compliance, and other relevant issues. Candidates must also possess and maintain a driver's license valid in the State of New York and be able to obtain and maintain a valid pistol permit to carry a service weapon.

Note: Revenue Crimes Specialist 1 is a non-competitive permanent position.
Duties Description The incumbent must be able to perform the following essential functions:
• apply knowledge of investigative principles, practices, and techniques of police and legal procedures pertaining to criminal activity and making arrests, while performing field investigations of white collar crime activity;
• issue all forms of summonses and subpoenas;
• interview, interrogate and locate individuals to prove criminal intent;
• plan, organize and conduct investigations by using effective organizational skills, tact and diplomacy;
• carry, maintain and appropriately use Department issued firearms as necessary;
• apply a basic knowledge of financial laws, rules and regulations and of relevant sections of the NYS Tax Laws in planning and performing investigations;
• communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with Department personnel and outside agencies, including testifying in court as necessary; and
• adhere to the Department’s time and attendance rules and regulations.
