Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: For permanent appointment, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a School Food Program Specialist 1 OR be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. For provisional appointment, candidates must have a bachelor's degree in nutritional science, nutrition education or dietetics OR a bachelor's degree in food service management, institutional food service management or hotel and restaurant management which much include or be supplemented by three credit hours in nutrition OR an associate's degree in nutritional science, nutrition education or dietetics AND two years of work experience in the degree area OR an associate's degree in food service management, institutional food service management or hotel and restaurant management which must include or be supplemented by three credit hours in nutrition AND two years of work experience in the degree area OR New York State certification as a Dietitian, Nutritionist or Dietitian Nutritionist.

Duties Description The Child Nutrition Program in the Office of P-12 Education is seeking candidates to fill four positions of School Food Program Specialist 1, Grade 14. This office is responsible for providing technical assistance and performing field inspections of schools, sponsors and residential child care institutions participating in the School Breakfast, School Lunch and Summer Food Service Programs (SFSP) and to ensure compliance with federal and State regulations, including the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Duties of these positions will include, but not be limited to the following:
• Conducting reviews of breakfast and lunch programs in school food authorities to ensure compliance with federal and State laws and regulations;
• Reviewing free and reduced priced applications;
• Documenting findings, preparing reports and drafting recommendation letters for improvement or corrective action;
• Conducting entrance/exit conferences with schools to review procedures, findings and any corrective action needed;
• Assisting in the organization and maintenance of records for auditing purposes;
• Analyzing menus, observing meal services and evaluating meal-counting systems;
• Evaluating or auditing accountability records to assess and ensure the integrity of reimbursement claims;
• Assisting in the development and preparation of educational materials on healthy eating and nutrition for distribution to students, teachers and school food service directors;
• Conducting special visits to schools to observe new programs to ensure compliance and make recommendations for approval;
• Assisting in the administration of grants and contracts in accordance with federal and State guidelines; and
• Assisting in the preparation and delivery of presentations for new managers and for those schools scheduled for monitoring reviews.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: These will be permanent contingent or provisional appointments. These positions require travel.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $53,604 based on annual performance advances.
