Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in the human services or social services field OR an Associate’s degree in the human services or social services field and two years of full-time experience in the human services or social services field working with students or other consumers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
1. Experience working with deaf students.
2. Ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language.
3. NYS certification in Special Education/Teacher of the Deaf.
4. NYS certification as a school administrator (SAS or SDA).

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking a Department Head (Curriculum & Instruction). Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Provide instructional leadership for the academic program.
• Provide professional development for staff in the areas of common core learning standards, instructional best practices and current pedagogy of deaf instruction.
• Ensure the sign language program is aligned to the literacy curriculum and that staff and students are skilled in communication in sign language.
• Coordinate curriculum teams to ensure compliance with the State Education Department regulations
• Collaborate with the Guidance Counselor to ensure all required assessments are administered and that students have meet the requirements for graduation.
• Revise the Pre K-12 literacy program to ensure it provides the support and structures to provide students who are deaf the opportunity to learn strategies that close the gap in reading and writing the inability to hear English has caused.
• Coordinate the implementation of a Pre K-12 literacy program.
• Oversee relationship between teacher practice and student results.
• Conduct classroom observations in collaboration with Assistant Superintendent and provide evaluations to instructional staff.
• Communicate with staff, parents, and students in the areas of curriculum.
• Collaborate with the Leadership Team to ensure cohesiveness and collaboration between departments.
• Work with Leadership Team to establish procedures to deal with student discipline.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment.
