Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet all of the following requirements:
Non-Competitive: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology or food science or a related field, and five years of experience in the management and supervision of a large analytical laboratory. One year of which should include published research and the design of analytical methods.
Substitution: A master’s degree in one of the above noted areas may substitute for one year of the experience. A Ph.D. in one of the above noted areas may substitute for two years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience and participation in national food safety and agricultural initiatives. For example, committees and workgroups within professional associations, the US FDA and/or the USDA. An earned doctorate in the above fields including a Doctor of Public Health or Science Doctorate.
Duties Description Duties include but are not limited to the following: As the Director, Food Laboratory, the incumbent would direct and administer the analytical programs in food and dairy chemistry, food and dairy microbiology, the USDA Pesticide Data Programs and fertilizer/lime testing within the New York State Food Laboratory. The incumbent would lead laboratory programs that provide regulatory program testing of food, feed, dairy products and agricultural commodities including fertilizer and lime samples. Scope of testing includes microbial pathogens, microbial quality parameters, biological and chemical toxins, chemical additives, pesticides, colors, extraneous materials, standards of identity and label guarantee. These testing programs directly support agency regulatory programs. In addition, the Director ensures that the laboratory maintains accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard. Other responsibilities include: the management, planning, budgeting staffing and development of all laboratory programs and the development of new testing methods through research, pilot projects and collaboration with external partners in other agencies and academia.
