Minimum Qualifications Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or

Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 21 or higher and either:
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below;
or
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as an Associate Industrial Hygienist.

Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 70.4 transfer eligibles): 1) a master's degree in industrial hygiene; or in occupational safety and health, environmental health, or environmental science which must include 12 credit hours in industrial hygiene and one year of experience in industrial hygiene.* Include with your application a list of industrial hygiene courses completed;
OR 2) a bachelor's degree in a field listed in "1" above and two years of experience in industrial hygiene;*
OR 3) a bachelor's degree in physical, biological, or engineering science; or in engineering which must include eight credit hours in chemistry and three years of experience in industrial hygiene.* Include with your application a list of chemistry courses completed.
* For the purposes of this posting, experience in industrial hygiene is defined as the identification and quantification of occupational health hazards, the development of practical methods to control or eliminate occupational health hazards, and the study and control of diseases which includes communicable diseases and other environmental factors affecting health, such as radiation, ergonomics, noise, pressure, and toxic materials including dust, gases, metals, mists, and vapors.

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Director of Health and Safety, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
• Perform health and safety assessments, inspections, consultations, and investigations in a variety of workplaces throughout New York State such as maintenance shops, campgrounds, administrative areas, hazardous waste/emergency response sites, construction sites, and laboratory areas, noting hazardous conditions and unsafe work practices.
• Select, set up, calibrate, monitor and read a wide variety of sampling and measuring devices.
• Prepare technical reports based on findings of studies, inspections, analysis of laboratory results, etc.
• Recommend and review corrective action to ensure hazard abatement is accomplished.
• Conduct/coordinate training on variety health and safety topics such as automated external defibrillator (AED), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, NYS Right-To-Know/Hazard Communication, hearing conservation, personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory protection, hazardous waste and emergency response (HAZWOPER), radiation, etc.
• May act as the DEC’s AED Program Administrator and/or Radiation Safety Officer.
• Promote sound industrial hygiene practices by working with employees, supervisors, managers, bargaining units, and state/federal governmental officials, as needed.
• Perform other related assignments, as required.
