Minimum Qualifications This is a transfer opportunity for current New York State employees only who are eligible to transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law - Candidates must have permanent status in a title approved for transfer by Civil Service within two salary grades of the Grade 6 level.

The Beginning Clerical Worker Eligible List is also used to fill this title. If you are on this list, you may receive a canvass letter.

Candidates who have not previously served in a keyboarding title must demonstrate adequate keyboarding skills (i.e. the ability to type 35 words per minute with at least 96% accuracy) by passing the Keyboard Specialist performance test.

Duties Description 18 month Traineeship leading to a SG 9.

•Open and close cases using Silvercase to docket all necessary information.
• Identify, docket and distribute incoming pleadings.
• Update case dockets to the appellate level.
• Review and distribute appellate calendars and decisions.
• Work with other bureaus and regional offices to ensure a smooth transfer of files on appeal.
• Screen and deliver incoming bureau mail.
• Type letters and affidavits of service for outgoing briefs.
• Type covers, statements and tables needed for inclusion in Records on Appeal.
• Type certificates and bills of costs.
• Create archives list for closed cases (via our paper management system [PAM]).
• Accept personal service of legal documents served on Attorney General’s office.
• File legal papers with appropriate court.
• Answer, screen, forward calls on case-related matters.
• Provide backup to mail run to post office and/or court runs.
• Draft and finalize appellate briefs and other legal work (affidavits, answers, motions).
• Cover the reception desk as necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments Upon successful completion of 12 months as Law Dept Document Specialist Trainee 1, you will automatically advance to Law Dept Document Specialist Trainee 2. (SG 8)

Upon successful completion of 6 months as Law Dept Document Specialist Trainee 2, you will automatically advance to Law Dept Document Specialist. (SG 9)
