Minimum Qualifications For Permanent appointment: Current NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Senior Sanitarian Grade 18 and eligible to transfer;
For Provisional appointment: Either A. bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences (defined below) AND one year of experience in environmental health protection (defined below) Or B. a bachelor’s degree, including 30 credits in the natural sciences; of which not more than 18 credits are in the applied sciences(defined below) AND two years of experience in environmental health protection (defined below) Substitution for the above: A master’s degree in the natural or applied sciences may be substituted for up to 1 year of required experience. DEFINITIONS: Applied sciences include science-based courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control, and food science. Natural sciences that are considered appropriate are biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences (geology and hydrology). Experience in Environmental Health Protection is defined as conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state, or local environmental laws, regulations, and established public health standards, OR in the notification of public health environmental hazards and the development of methods to eliminate or control such hazards and/or the spread of diseases and other environmental factors impacting the health of individuals and/or the public, such as in hospitals and long term care facilities.

Duties Description Evaluate environmental health, fire safety and general care and safety requirements in hospitals, diagnostic and treatment centers and other healthcare facilities to determine compliance with the NYS Public Health Law, Sanitary Code, Life Safety Code, NFPA, FGI, etc. Sanitarians also will prepare survey/inspection reports citing deficiencies, review plans of correction and conduct follow-up surveys, certificate of need inspections and complaint investigations.

Additional Comments Permanent-contingent or provisional, full-time appointment. Candidates appointed provisionally will be required to take and pass a qualifying Civil Service exam and be reachable for appointment on the resulting eligible list. This position requires fieldwork. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs involved.
