Minimum Qualifications Two years of experience* in the management of honey bee colonies.
*Substitution: Possession of three college credits in a beekeeping course may substitute for six months of experience.

Please note, the qualifications are for the minimum standards, but additional bee experience is helpful for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle. (reimbursement for mileage)
• Knowledge of bee behavior; a familiarity with bees, colony and apiary management practices.
• Knowledge of and working experience with bee equipment.
• The required skill and ability to open hives of bees; to remove combs for visual inspection. This would include the ability to remove and replace combs, queen excluders and other bee equipment properly without killing the queen and only a few bees.
• Basic knowledge of larva and adult bee diseases, their life history and symptoms.
• Be able to accept instructions, direction and training by experienced bee inspectors.
• Be available to relocate to other areas within New York State for limited periods of time.


Duties Description The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking candidates for Apiary Inspector 1 for the 2015 honey bee season. Apiary Inspectors inspect hives for the presence of pathogens and parasites that adversely affect honeybee health and honey production. Apiary Inspectors also collect pollen and other types of samples for analysis under the National Honeybee Survey.
