Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be able to read, write and speak English, must be able to follow written and spoken instructions, and must be in good health and good physical condition.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• Experience working with deaf students; and
• The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking to fill a Child Care Aide 1 (Substitute) position. Duties of this position will include but not be limited to:

• Maintain the safety and well-being of students by escorting students to and from meals during breakfast and lunch times, monitoring assigned exits during evacuation emergencies, bringing children requiring medical attention to the health center, supervising and maintaining control in all areas where children are gathered, and assisting and chaperoning students on off-campus activities;
• Utilize a total communication approach to language development in the presence of hearing impaired individuals by using both sign language and voice at all times;
• Check to make sure that each student has his/her hearing aid and/or glasses daily;
• Attend to students’ personal hygiene needs and the development of appropriate daily living skills;
• Assist students during meal times by providing supervision at each dining room entrance, checking assigned students at meal time for appropriate behaviors, encouraging younger students to eat balanced meals, and conversing with students during meal times to help create a relaxed, family-type atmosphere;
• Prevent child abuse and maltreatment and carry out all responsibilities as a mandated reporter of child abuse and maltreatment;
• Attend all staff training;
• Use approved techniques (under direction of Child Care Aide 2) to manage students; and
• Report to supervisors regarding occurrences giving rise to concerns involving children in care.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This is a temporary, hourly position to substitute for full time Child Care Aide 1's on 2nd and 3rd shift on an as-needed basis. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of Budget approval.
