Minimum Qualifications Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent status as a Public Health Educator, G-22; OR current New York State employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service in a title G-20 or above and eligible to for transfer to Public Health Educator under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law by meeting the following minimum qualifications: Bachelor's or higher degree, including or supplemented by 30 credits in education and five years of experience in the development and implementation of a public health/health education program that includes an outreach component. One year of this experience must have been supervisory. A Master’s Degree in education or public health may be substituted for one year of the non-supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have experience translating technical science-based messages for diverse audiences; conducting communication planning, including identifying audiences and developing messages and distribution plans; project management skills; and familiarity with programmatic evaluation and risk communication research. The candidate should also have experience in literature reviews, needs assessments, survey design and analysis, focus groups, and pilot projects; strong computer skills including familiarity with MS Office products. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suites design and a background in publication and web design is helpful.
Duties Description The position will be assigned to the Outreach and Education Bureau within the Center for Environmental Health and will be responsible for providing consultation and advice to the Bureaus and Divisions wishing to develop and implement educational initiatives. The incumbent will support activities in the Center to raise awareness about environmental health issues, help public audiences make informed decisions, and facilitate behavioral changes that reduces exposure to environmental hazards. The Public Health Educator will use educational principles and methods to work with target audiences to promote health and will provide messages and materials for emerging areas of public health concern and develop training and/or curricula. The incumbent will conduct needs assessments, create partnerships with stakeholders, and evaluate program needs and conduct data collection related to audience preconceptions and beliefs about specific environmental health programs. In addition, the Public Health Educator will provide outreach training and support to technical staff and to local health departments in communicating technical information to audiences; serve as a liaison to assist with Center programmatic activities in targeted communities; evaluate program effectiveness; and prepare articles for publication on outcomes of research.
Additional Comments Full-time, permanent appointment. Occasional Statewide travel, including overnights and travel to areas that may not be served by public transportation, may be required.
