Minimum Qualifications Horticultural Inspector Trainee 1, NS:
Bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 24 credit semester hours in courses related to: horticulture, forestry, plant pathology, botany, entomology, environmental studies/plant science, or a biological science primarily related to the scientific study of plants or animals.
Satisfactory experience in horticulture may substitute for up to 60 college credits, at the rate of one year of experience equaling 30 semester credit hours.
OR
Horticultural Inspector Trainee 2, NS:
Bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 24 credit semester hours in courses related to: horticulture, forestry, plant pathology, botany, entomology, environmental studies/plant science, or a biological science primarily related to the scientific study of plants or animals AND one year of horticultural experience.
Satisfactory experience in horticulture may substitute for up to 60 college credits, at the rate of one year of experience equaling 30 semester credit hours.
Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.
Duties Description As a Horticultural Inspector Trainee you would serve a one or two-year traineeship leading to Horticultural Inspector 1, Grade 18. This is a field based position therefore, the appointee's official station and office will be their home. This position is responsible for the region of Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties. Duties will include but will not be limited to: responsible for the inspection of plants and plant products to prevent and/or control the movement of injurious insect pest and plant diseases; inspect, and obtain for laboratory analysis, samples of seeds, fertilizers and agricultural liming materials to prevent the sale of inaccurately and improperly labeled products; meet with horticultural growers, merchants, and distributors to conduct inspections; explain inspection findings; implement corrective actions; and explain the provisions of the Agricultural and Markets Law.
Additional Comments The desired candidate should be highly organized and be able to work independently. This position may involve working outdoors in all types of weather including cold, snow, heat, humidity and other inclement conditions. Due to the travel requirements of this position, the appointee will be required to operate a motor vehicle and possess a driver’s license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Additionally, the appointee may need to provide their own motor vehicle. Field work and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule. Specific information regarding work assignment and travel requirements will be discussed at the interview.
