Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a High School diploma or GED AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND New York State certification as a Teaching Assistant, or be eligible to obtain such certificate within one (1) year of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have the following:
• Experience working with deaf students;
• The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language; and
• Experience working with adults as part of a team.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $34,740-$35,935 with annual performance advances.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking applicants to fill a Special Education Assistant position. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school’s education or residential programs. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Provide direct supervision to students;
• Assist Instructors in the delivery and practice of content;
• Supervise students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;
• Escort students from class to class; and
• Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This will be a permanent position.
