Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have either a high school diploma or GED AND a valid NYS driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to employees who demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Reader software and possess good keyboarding skills.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of P-12 Education is seeking candidates for the position of Support Services Assistant in the Office of State Assessment. This Office is responsible for the development and statewide administration of all State examinations for elementary, intermediate and high school students. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for assisting an employee who is legally blind. Duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Assist in the preparation of brailing documents, including converting electronic versions of documents into Microsoft Word, running them through a computer-based Braille Transcription Software program, proofreading both documents to ensure they match, and making corrections and adjustments to the format as appropriate;
• Read written or electronic materials aloud or read them silently and provide a verbal or written summary of the content, including providing descriptions of pictures within the documents when needed;
• Enter changes into Microsoft Word or other documents utilizing editing features based on a list of changes provided by the editor;
• Attend meetings, secure printed materials, and take notes on information that would otherwise be inaccessible for the employee being assisted;
• May work with adaptive technology such as a braille embosser, braille transcription software, and a computer with voice recognition software; and
• May travel with the employee and assist in on-site work.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary position and is contingent upon the continued employment of the employee to whom assistance is being provided. Statewide travel may be required. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval.
