Transfer Qualifications:

Applicants must have one year of permanent competitive or 55 b/c service as a Senior Statistician, SG-18 .



Provisional Quals:

A bachelor's degree or higher in statistics; OR a bachelor's degree or higher including or supplemented by 24 semester credit hours in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, economics/econometrics, mathematics, operations research, or research methods, three (3) of which must be in statistics or biostatistics and nine (9) more of which must be from among; differential or integral calculus, econometrics, biostatistics, or statistics; AND two years of professional statistical research experience. Acceptable experience may include but is not limited to experience with substantial responsibility for compiling and interpreting statistical data including the use of standard statistical software package in a personal computer or mainframe environment. Experience primarily involving the clerical accumulation and manipulation of statistics will NOT be regarded as qualifying.

If appointed provisionally, the incumbent will need to pass the next Senior Statistician examination and be reachable in order to receive a permanent appointment.

Duties Description Under the direction of the Associate Statistician and the Director of the Policy & Research Bureau the Senior Statistician (SG18) position includes the following responsibilities/duties:

-- Participates in initial discussions
-- Reviews data
-- Performs case folder review of individual claims to obtain missing data
-- Edits and proofreads report drafts
-- Contacts WC agencies of other states to develop comparisons.
-- Disability Benefits
-- Receives completed DB-680s and DB-681’s
-- Contacts Insurance Carriers regarding missing DB-680’s
-- Contacts Self-insurance regarding missing DB-681’s
-- Edits DB-680s and DB-681s
-- Checks form for internal arithmetic accuracy
-- Where possible compares form with last year’s report
-- Corrects obvious errors
-- Contacts carrier or SI when necessary to correct errors
-- Creates tables by carrier type (insurance company or self-insurer) and by coverage type (plan or statutory)
-- Annually provides data to Social Security Administration
-- Responds to outside requests for DB related data
-- Monthly QA – Routine reports
-- Initial checking of principal reports.
-- Work with developers to resolve issues with reports.
-- QA – new reports for Mirror
-- Checks reports and works with developers to resolve issues.
-- QA – Annual report to the Governor’s Office

Supervisory duties:
The Senior Statistician may supervise the Statistician (G-14) and clerical support positions on a full-time or project basis. Supervisory duties include:
• Schedules and assigns work to the subordinate staff.
• Trains or assists in training staff in the procedures and techniques required in the performance of the job.
• Reviews completed work for accuracy and compliance with instructions.
• Resolves statistical problems and answers questions from the staff.
• May provide advice and assistance to program officials, line supervisors and others concerning statistical procedures, methods and plans and in the interpretation of study results.
• Through written correspondence, telephone or personal contact, explains such areas as the status of the study and the statistical methods and procedures used.
• Provides advice and assistance to program officials and others regarding most appropriate statistical approaches and applications to use to solve specific problems.
• Interprets study results indicating such factors as the reliability of the data, the significance of relationships, and generally the significance and meaning of the study findings.
• Answers questions and resolves problems concerning projects' statistical requirements.
