Minimum Qualifications Interested candidates must be reachable on the Legal Assistant 1 eligible list or Legal Assistant Trainee eligible list; or eligible to transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
To be eligible for transfer to Legal Assistant:
NYS employees must have at least one year of permanent competitive service in an appropriate SG-12 or higher title and possession of an associate's degree or certificate in legal studies, paralegal studies, or legal assistant studies from an accredited institution or one approved by the American Bar Association, and meet transfer eligibility requirements.
To be eligible to transfer to Legal Assistant Trainee 1:
NYS employees must have at least one year of permanent competitive service in an appropriate SG-11 or higher title and possession of an associate's degree or certificate in legal studies, paralegal studies, or legal assistant studies from an accredited institution or one approved by the American Bar Association, and meet transfer eligibility requirements.
Trainees will be required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college or university. Also, in addition, one or more college or training courses in writing skills will be required in addition to on-the-job-training activities.

Duties Description Processing Unclaimed Funds Claims

1. Analyze information contained within the claim file and process routine claims for unclaimed funds which have been referred for legal review.
2. Make telephone inquiries to third parties and respond to telephone inquiries from claimants in connection with unclaimed funds functions. Provide routine information regarding processes and procedures as needed.
3. Draft letters to claimants and third parties in connection with unclaimed funds processing.
4. Prepare preliminary recommendations for approval or denial of payment of routine claims for unclaimed funds.
5. Use the unclaimed funds processing system to log information, process payments and close claim files.

Additional Comments DESIRED COMPETENCIES:

1) Familiarity with the Estates, Powers and Trusts Law and the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act.
2) Ability to write clearly and concisely.
3) Ability to verbally communicate well particularly as to claimant’s questions by phone.
