Salary RangeFrom $47394 to $52550 Annually
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher AND a valid NYS Teaching Certificate. Candidates must have the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates with a Masters’ Degree in Special Education or Teaching of the Visually Impaired and who have NYS certification as a School Administrator and Supervisor OR are eligible for School Administrator and Supervisor certification OR have experience with visually impaired populations.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Blind is seeking applicants to fill a Head of Department position. Under the direction of the School Superintendent, the incumbent of this position will oversee related service providers and will serve as the alternate Chairperson for Special Education. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Supervise related-services staff and staff located at the Campus Resource Center;
• Schedule related services, including Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Recreational Therapy-Music, Recreational Therapy-Art, & Audiology;
• Report Medicaid and required data for school districts;
• Coordinate the annual Braille Challenge Event, the Weekend & Weeklong Outreach Programs, and various outreach and community involvement programs;
• Coordinate and facilitate the Committee on Special Education meetings and Individualized Educational Planning for students;
• Prepare federal grant applications;
• Assist with the coordination of the student intake process;
• Organize data for State reports;
• Lead internal school committees as assigned by the Superintendent;
• Supervise the Extended School Year Program; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This will be a permanent, 10-month position. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.
* Leads to a maximum salary of $67,947-$83,812 (depending on education level) through annual performance advances.
