Six years of experience as a radio systems engineer involving the development, deployment, operation, and maintenance of wireless land mobile radio or other wireless communication systems.
College degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, applied engineering, physics, or a related field may substitute for general experience as follows: associate’s, two years; bachelor’s, four years; and master’s, five years.
Duties Description The incumbent is responsible for engineering, technical support and analysis for the Office of Interoperable and Emergency Communications (OIEC). In doing so, the incumbent collaborates with peers and other staff from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) offices, other State agencies and outside entities (local governments, federal agencies, consultants) in relation to planning, implementing, or operating public safety communications systems.
Duties will involve providing emergency/disaster response communications as requested by OEM or the Executive, including technical support, operation and maintenance of communications assets deployed during exercises and disaster response incidents. Other required duties include analyzing radio, microwave and satellite communications system functionality and performance; resolving and repairing hardware and software problems and directing routine maintenance to ensure optimal network operations and service; developing technical standards for the operation and maintenance of the emergency communications systems and assets; monitoring the use of public safety radio frequencies. The incumbent is expected to maintain a thorough knowledge of the state-of-the-art in land mobile radio, emergency services dispatching systems, voice & data telecommunications and emerging technologies with applications intended for the field of public safety. Familiarity in operating deployable assets, communications equipment, and land mobile radio/satellite/and telecommunications systems is desired.
The Radio Engineer will also assist in developing and analyzing intergovernmental tactical interoperable communications plans, regional and interagency governance activities and policy analysis in relation to the Statewide Communications Interoperability Plan. Positions may be assigned to Albany facilities or other DHSES Regional Office locations.
