Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Services AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience with visually impaired populations in a residential setting.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Blind (NYSSB) is seeking applicants to fill a Head of Department (Residential) position. The NYSSB provides educational and residential services to students who are blind and have severe multiple disabilities. Under the direction of the Superintendent and Coordinator of a State Operated School, major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Manage the overall operation of the school’s Residential Program;
• Ensure student behavioral implementation plans are being implemented consistently and appropriate other services and supports are delivered appropriately;
• Supervise the residential staff, including Child Care Aide 2’s and Recreation Therapists;
• Monitor quality assurance of the residential program and assist in policy development and implementation;
• Develop and implement student and staff schedules in support of the needs of the students;
• Ensure all appropriate linkage is made with the health office and the academic program;
• Implement and monitor child abuse prevention, safety, and health and per the School policies and procedures and consistent with the Justice Center;
• Prepare and submit annual Department budget and monitor expenditures;
• Ensure all student records are current;
• Coordinate and maintain records for in-service training of residential staff;
• Participate in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings for 5-day residential students;
• Participate in other internal school committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent; and
• Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with the policies and procedures of the NYSSB, including all policies and procedures relating to the prevention and or reporting of abuse and neglect.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This will be a permanent, 10-month position. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position will require the incumbent to work a varied schedule to cover multiple shifts.
* Leads to a maximum salary of $67,947-$83,812 (depending on education level) through annual performance advances.
