Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have successful completion of the NYS two (2) year Refrigeration Mechanic Traineeship*; OR successful completion of NYS two (2) year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program* and completion of 4,000 hours of trade specific on-the-job training under a journey-level trades position; OR three (3) years of experience in mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level trades person, which includes training equivalent to that given in a two (2) year applied skilled trades traineeship or an apprenticeship, one year (1) of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment. Training gained by completion of technical courses in mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Refrigeration Mechanic is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment located at IBR and as assigned in Region 5 (New York City).
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Refrigeration Mechanics are responsible for journey level work in the operation, maintenance, repair and installation of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.
• Performs seasonal start-up and shut-down operations on air-conditioning units and systems to insure efficient operation and to prevent freeze-ups.
• Troubleshoots and replaces control devices, calibrating and recalibrating them as necessary.
• Installs line voltage and control voltage electric wiring necessary to connect components to power source.
• Tests lines, connections and components for leaks with leak detector which indicates the presence of refrigerant.
• Operates and maintains cooling towers and all related equipment.
• Installs new equipment both as replacement units and new installations.
• Requires daily travel within the district.
• May require some travel within NY State to assist other districts with special projects.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
• Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Will be required to train and supervise others.
• Requires universal refrigerant certification.
• Candidate will be trained in the operation and maintenance procedures as related to Asbestos Containing Materials.
• Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.
• Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.
• Basic computer skills preferred.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License.
