Duties Description Position Summary:
Plant Utilities Assistants perform various tasks in a safe and efficient manner in operating stationary steam or high temperature hot water boilers rated at 15 pounds per square inch or more; maintain and repair boilers, pumps, other power plant auxiliary equipment, and electrical and mechanical stationary equipment; and may supervise Plant Utilities Helpers as required. Experienced incumbents may be assigned a limited number of activities requiring the full performance level skills of a Plant Utilities Engineer 1. Respond to calls concerning mechanical, electrical or plumbing breakdowns to troubleshoot the problem, make necessary repairs or advise the appropriate authority regarding the problem. Must be able to read, understand, and follow written and/or oral instructions including all technical drawings, manuals, safety training and other various procedures. Check mechanical rooms for correct operation of mechanical equipment. Operate and test water softeners and boiler water for correct limits. Take readings on meters and gauges to ensure proper operation. Check air compressors, blow down and add oil as needed. Must be physically able to lift and move equipment; salt bags (50+ pounds), ability to bend, twist, perform over-head work, climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, catwalks, use and work from mobile and/or aerial work platforms. Candidate must be able to enter boilers, steam drums, mud drums and various other confined spaces to work for extended periods of time. Properly use and maintain hand tools in the maintenance and repair of boiler piping, auxiliary and other mechanical equipment. Attendance history will be considered when filling this vacancy.

Preferred Qualifications:
This position requires traveling within and between campuses. A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is preferred, or the candidate should otherwise demonstrate his/her capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
