Minimum Qualifications Possession of valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License AND one year of experience in the operation of equipment noted as appropriate for this class.


Preferred qualifications:

Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of self-propelled equipment.
Basic knowledge of the repair and maintenance work needed by equipment and ability to perform routine repair and maintenance.
Basic knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the assigned equipment.
Experience with the operation of a chainsaw.

Duties Description Forest Health is looking for qualified individuals to join the Southern Pine Beetle (SPB) Response Team on Long Island. While SPB is an insect native to the southern US, its range has been expanding north over the past few decades. It is suspected to have arrived in NY with Super Storm Sandy in 2012 but was not detected until 2014. Since its arrival, SPB has caused 1000s of acres of mortality in pitch pine stands on Long Island.

As a member of this dynamic team, the selected candidate will work in the field operating a compact track loader with forestry mower and timber harvester head attachments. This equipment will be used to cut down trees infested with SPB and thin forests that are susceptible to SPB. Operator will also trailer and move equipment between work sites.

Operator will be required to operate assigned machine in a safe and efficient manner and will be required to perform medium to heavy physical labor.

Additional Comments This is a temporary position with a duration of 6/1/16 -11/30/16.

This position will require the operation of a compact track loader and the operation of forestry mower and timber harvester attachments.

This position will require the use and maintenance of a chainsaw. The appointed candidate will attend Game of Logging Level 1 and Level 2 courses.
