Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligible List Appointment: Candidates who are reachable on the Food Service Worker 2 eligible list may be considered for appointment.
§70.1 Transfer: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Dietitian 1, Dietitian 2, Nutrition Services Administrator 1, or Nutrition Services Administrator 2.
§52.7 Non-Competitive Promotion
If there are three or fewer qualified candidates, a permanent appointment may be made as a non-competitive promotion pursuant to §52.7 of the Civil Service Law. To qualify, you must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Food Service Worker 1.
Provisional Appointment: If the Food Service Worker 2 eligible list contains fewer than 3 acceptors, a provisional appointment may be considered. For provisional appointment, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Food Service Worker 1 OR 1 year of permanent non-competitive service as a Dietitian Technician or Cook OR two years of qualifying experience in commercial or institutional food preparation or food service.
Commercial or institutional food service includes but is not limited to employment in a hospital, school cafeteria, residential dining hall, nursing home, or full-service restaurant. Experience must have included responsibility for food preparation, food service, and ordering of food and non-food supplies. Appropriate formal culinary arts or food service training which resulted in a certificate or degree may be credited towards the above experience as follows:
• A six-month certificate training program may be credited for up to six months of the required experience;
• A one-year certificate training program may be credited for up to one year of the required experience; or
• An associate’s degree or higher in culinary arts or food service from a regionally accredited college or university may be credited for up to two years of the required experience.
Appropriate formal food service training programs are programs accredited by one of the following: American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC) or non-degree programs recognized by the American Culinary Federation Foundation Educational Assurance program or programs accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Candidates must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting.
PR-50 Appointment
If there are no qualified candidates willing to accept a permanent appointment to Food Service Worker 2 (50%), a PR-50 appointment to Food Service Worker 1 (50%) may be considered. For permanent appointment to Food Service Worker 1 (50%), candidates must be reachable on the Food Service Worker 1 eligible list.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Blind is seeking applicants to fill a part-time (50%) Food Service Worker 2 position. Under the direction of the Food Service Worker 3, the incumbent of this position will assist in all food service management activities. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Assist in the preparation of meals;
• Ensure proper sanitation of all kitchen areas and all pots, pans, sinks, steam tables, coolers and equipment;
• Supervise the Food Service Worker 1’s and, in the absence of the Food Service Worker 3, supervise the operation of the kitchen; and
• Inspect all kitchen areas to ensure that cleaning agents and chemicals are picked up, are properly stored, and are out of students’ reach.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This will be a permanent or provisional, 12-month position. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval.
The salary listed above applies to candidates appointed to Food Service Worker 2 (50%), SG-09. The hiring rate for candidates appointed to Food Service Worker 1 (50%) starts at $13,667, and for current New York State employees, is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $20,878 (50% of $41,756) with annual performance advances.
