Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or related natural sciences field and one year of post-degree professional experience in the field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have a strong background in virology and molecular biology. Experience in a public health setting with a background in infectious diseases; experience with cellular and molecular techniques, including cell and virus culture, nucleic acid extraction, real-time and conventional RT-PCR assays; experience with BSL-2 laboratory work as well as excellent communication, organizational skills, and scientific writing experience.

Duties Description The incumbent will participate in all aspects of the surveillance and testing at the Virology Laboratory, including molecular and cellular testing of human clinical samples. Primary responsibilities will include inoculating and monitoring cell cultures for virus identification, and extraction and PCR for virus detection and characterization. Additional duties will include development and validation of new tests, viral sequencing, data analysis, reporting of results and general laboratory housekeeping duties.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, full-time. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent re-assignment of this position, satisfactory background checks may also be required.
