Minimum Qualifications FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEER 2
Promotion: One year of service as a Fire Protection Engineer 1 and possession of a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer.
Open Competitive:
1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher in fire protection engineering and possession of a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer; OR
2. Possession of a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and two years of full-time paid fire protection engineering experience.*
* Fire protection engineering experience includes: 1) analysis of fire hazards; 2) mitigation of fire damage by proper design, construction, arrangement and use of buildings, materials, structures, industrial processes, and transportation systems; 3) the design, installation, and maintenance of fire detection and suppression and communication systems; 4) post-fire investigation and analysis. The majority of experience must be in #1 or #2.

Duties Description The Division of Building Standards and Codes (BSC) administers the mandatory statewide Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (Uniform Code) and State Energy Conservation Construction Code (Energy Code). The Division provides a variety of services related to the Uniform Code and Energy Code. It provides technical assistance, administers variances, delivers educational courses, oversees the enforcement practices of local governments and serves as secretariat to the State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council. The Albany Central Office and eleven regional offices throughout the state provide regional service to elected officials and local code enforcement personnel regarding general requirements for code enforcement. The Division program was created by Chapter 707 of the Laws of 1981. The New York Legislature enacted Article 18 of the Executive Law, directing the formulation of a Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (Uniform Code). The Uniform Code is designed to cover new construction, building rehabilitation, fire safety, and housing maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provide technical assistance to code enforcement and fire officials, as well as state officials, contractors and design professionals on the matter associated with the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (Uniform Code);
• Process variances and appeals from provisions of the Uniform Code;
• Perform direct enforcement of the Uniform Code in municipalities that have opted-out of the local code enforcement responsibilities when necessary;
• Investigate complaints regarding municipal administration and enforcement of the Uniform Code;
• Give presentations to code enforcement and fire officials, contractors and design professionals;
• Duty requires field work and travel.
