Minimum Qualifications Candidates must be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or a current NYS employee eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 or 70.4 of the Civil Service Law. Depending on qualifications, candidates may be required to serve a 2-year traineeship that leads to the journey level, grade 18 position.

To be eligible for transfer under Section 70.1, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title that has been deemed transferable by the Department of Civil Service.
To be eligible for transfer under Section 70.4, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a position allocated to grade 11 or higher, possess a bachelor’s degree; and have standing on the Professional Careers Opportunities (PCO) or Public Administration Traineeship Transition (PATT) eligible list.

Duties Description Under the direct supervision of the Information Representative 2, incumbents perform a variety of writing and editing tasks for the preparation of educational, informational and promotional material (e.g., publications, social media content, web, multimedia and video projects, correspondence). These materials are for the benefit of NYSLRS members, retirees, beneficiaries, employers that participate in NYSLRS and business partners, as well as employees of the Division of Retirement Services and the Office of the State Comptroller. Information Representatives also function as subject matter experts on retirement-related matters.
• Writes, edits and/or updates Retirement System newsletters, plan booklets, life changes booklets and brochures, and other print or web publications using knowledge of Retirement laws, policies and procedures. Works with bureau design staff to develop and review layouts. Ensures flow of content is logical in relation to layout and is appropriate for various audiences.
• Writes and/or edits content for social media content (NYSLRS blog, Facebook, Twitter). Reviews content to ensure it accurately presents retirement-related information.
• Reviews web content and edits, updates or creates new content as needed. Ensures content is appropriate for the intended audience (i.e., member, retiree, employer, etc.). Ensures content is clear, concise and consistent with NYSLRS style.
• Reviews correspondence sent to members, retirees and employers by the various Retirement bureaus. Ensures content is clear, concise and consistent with NYSLRS style.
• Drafts responses to inquiries received through various email boxes, social media outlets and by telephone. Drafts replies to correspondence sent to the Comptroller and Deputy Comptroller regarding retirement benefits, legislation and policies, making sure information, style and tone are appropriate for the audience. Responses/replies are thoroughly researched, and are clear, concise and easy to understand.
• Writes/reviews/edits NYSLRS’ monthly electronic newsletter, E-News, and the corresponding web pages. E-News is emailed to employers and members who subscribe, and helps ensure our customers have the most up-to-date retirement benefit information available.
• Ensures all content, including new or updated content and responses/replies to inquiries, is reviewed by the appropriate Retirement staff and suggested changes are reviewed, researched and, if suitable, made before project moves into a higher-level of authorization.
• When new projects are requested and retirement content needs to be developed, attends meetings with Retirement Communications staff and/or representatives from other bureaus/divisions to discuss project scope, objectives, design features, target audience, due dates and final format.
• Accurately proofreads print and online publications, web and social media content and correspondence for accuracy, spelling, formatting and style based on pre-defined bureau/agency standards.
• Participates in special projects and represents the bureau on cross-bureau or inter-divisional teams and committees as assigned. Represents supervisor or bureau management if needed.
