Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Provisional Appointment: Must have a bachelor’s degree in history, biology, anthropology, archeology, art, or geology AND two years of experience in planning, developing and marketing programs for exhibits, events, publications, conferences and programs at a museum or cultural institution with an annual visitation of at least 100,000.
PERFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess early childhood and/or elementary school program experience OR two years of experience developing and/or implementing educationally-based programming in a cultural institution.
Duties Description The New York Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking to fill a Museum Support Services Specialist 2 within the New York State Museum (NYSM). Under the direction of the Chief Museum Education and Visitor Services, the Museum Support Services Specialist 2 will perform a variety of activities aimed at oversight of the work of the Visitor Services Assistants (VSA) in welcoming all visitors and groups to the NYSM. Duties of the position will include, but are not limited, to the following:
• Oversee the work of the VSA through the development of weekly schedules, monitor time and attendance, conduct annual and semi-annual performance appraisals, and annual work plans;
• Coordinate VSA support for museum-based programs, exhibits, and events;
• Schedule and support the development of programming conducted by the VSA;
• Staff and develop programs for the NYSM’s Discovery Place;
• Schedule interpretive talks, programs, and activities for diverse audiences;
• Conduct tours of exhibits;
• Maintain on-going knowledge of the evacuation procedures of the NYSM, schedule training for emergency preparedness of the VSA, act as a liaison between health and safety officials, security staff, the VSA, and management;
• Oversight of registration for all school and group visits and scheduling of the VSA to orient all groups to the NYSM;
• Organize training for the VSA in relation to operating the NYSM’s antique carousel and notify relevant departments of mechanical, safety, or conservations needs of the carousel;
• Implement orientation of new staff members;
• Represent audience needs and VSA concerns on Museum-wide committees;
• Prepare and present informal learning opportunities within the galleries through the NYSM’s Exploration Stations; and
• Support school-based educational programs through the scheduling of informal, gallery-based educational experiences.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a provisional appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Hours of this position are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday-Sunday, including holidays, weekends, and occasional overtime. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $66,494 based on annual performance advances.
