Minimum Qualifications REACHABLE ON THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL SERVICE LIST FOR LEGAL ASSISTANT 2, PERMANENT OR CONTINGENT PERMANENT STATUS AS A LEGAL ASSISTANT 2, OR ELIGIBLE FOR TRANSFER OR REINSTATEMENT.
Duties Description • Support Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) and Bureau staff in drafting and preparation of forms, correspondence and legal documents for state and federal litigation and for proceedings before state and federal agencies (e.g., legal research, review and/or drafting of pleadings, discovery demands, motions, memoranda, briefs, affidavits, privilege logs, etc.).
• Manage and conduct electronic filing and serving of traditional litigation documents.
• Generate or format documents as necessary for court and agency filings, including use of various software programs such as Office 2010 and Adobe PDF.
• Have or be willing to develop an understanding of federal and state court and agency rules.
• Organize and manage litigation documents, including appendices, agency administrative records, returns, tables of authorities and contents, discovery and FOIL responses using electronic and hard copy document management systems (Concordance, Clearwell, Relativity, etc.).
• Be the point of contact for electronic discovery coordination, working closely with the Information Technology Bureau.
• Read and evaluate agency referrals and legal pleadings, coordinate with client agencies, and provide strategic options and responses to AAGs.
• Assist with trial preparation, including coordinating logistics for fact and expert witness testimony and preparing exhibits for use in court.
• Review investigations and files for Bureau cases both prior to filing and after judgment, using available databases and other corporate or financial resources.
• Use internet-based research tools and electronic dockets to support Bureau efforts.
• Conduct legislative research, track legislative processes, and assist in development of legislation and policy as requested.
• Coordinate office workflow including staffing and system training with Bureau management.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Comments The ideal candidate would have excellent project management and legal research skills, be self-motivated, and possess good judgement, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
