Candidates must have a bachelor's degree or be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State AND have two years of experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness. A master's degree in a health or human services area* may be substituted for one year of the above experience.

* Appropriate health and human services degrees include sociology, psychology, education, rehabilitation, recreation therapy, nursing, speech pathology, audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, community mental health, music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, health administration, human services, counseling, nutrition, and criminal justice.

If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.

Duties Description As a Residential Program Specialist, you would provide care to individuals diagnosed with mental illness in community residential settings in a culturally competent manner. Under the general direction of the Residential Program Manager, you would take the lead among staff in the monitoring, identifying needs, and care of residents. You would have specific responsibility for planning and implementing rehabilitative programs and individually designed service plans for patients in the residence and for establishing and maintaining contacts with other service providers in the community. You may also supervise lower level residential program staff and may serve as assistant to the Residential Program Manager and as manager of the residence in his/her absence.

Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review:
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
