Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications for taking the promotional examination:

Must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent non-competitive service as a Maintenance Assistant (Mechanic).

-At the the time of appointment, agencies may require you to furnish a basic tool set.
-At the time of appointment, agencies will require your certification by the Department of Motor Vehicles to conduct NYS inspections.
-Some agencies require that within three months of appointment you must obtain an appropriate commercial driver's license or any additional driving endorsement determined by the agency.

Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination: must have:
-Either four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems; OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

-Substitution: Education may be substituted for a maximum of two years experience.
1. Graduation from a technical or vocational program such as B.O.C.E.S., in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
2. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

Experience limited to airplane (aviation) mechanic (except for ground equipment); gas station attendant; the repair of motorcycles, motor boats, or small engines; installation or repair of transmissions, mufflers, brakes, or tires; new car preparation; auto body repair work; or management activities as the owner or supervisor of a repair shop or service station is NOT QUALIFYING.

Duties Description As directed, the motor equipment mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in the diagnosis of the cause of breakdowns and of faulty mechanical and electrical performance of gas or diesel powered self-propelled vehicles and equipment. **Visually examines equipment, reviews breakdown reports. Using appropriate test equipment and observation, diagnoses the cause of the faulty mechanical or electrical performance. Following technical manuals and experience, plans the work procedure required to make the repair and orders replacement parts and materials. After locating the trouble, makes the repairs using mechanics hand and power tools and test equipment on engines and components. May make periodic safety inspections of state owned vehicles following prescribed procedures set forth by the New York State Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection Law. Incumbents must be licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicle.
