Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position, which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in the trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-by-year basis. Candidates must be physically able to perform duties assigned.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking to fill a General Mechanic position. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide journey-level trade work in a field of either electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or heating;
• Install, maintain and repair the various components of the School’s electrical distribution, building electrical safety devices, and lighting systems and their associated equipment;
• Troubleshoot, maintain and repair security alarms, fire alarms, temperature control systems, emergency power distribution systems and their controls;
• Complete assigned tasks following applicable codes;
• Maintain appropriate inventories for the maintenance and repair of the various electrical systems;
• Schedule, perform, and record preventive maintenance tasks;
• Provide skilled services in at least one of the other mechanical trades; and
• Assist other trades as assigned.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a contingent permanent appointment. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $49,041 with annual performance advances.
