Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Reassignment: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Senior Librarian (Reference).

Provisional Appointment: Candidates must have either: 1) a master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school AND two years of full time post-degree professional librarian experience in public reference services in an academic, special or public library using both traditional and automated reference tools and involving materials selection OR 2) a master’s degree in Information Studies from an American Library Association accredited school AND two years of full time post-degree professional librarian experience in public reference services in an academic, special or public library using both traditional and automated reference tools and involving materials selection OR a combined master’s degree in Library Science/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited school AND two years of full time post-degree professional librarian experience in public reference services in an academic, special or public library using both traditional and automated reference tools and involving materials selection A Master’s degree in computer science or information technology is not qualifying.

Note: The Civil Service examination for this title is being given in August 2016. In order to be considered for a provisional appointment, you must have signed up to take this examination. The deadline for the examination was June 22, 2016.

Duties Description The New York State Library (NYSL) is seeking to fill a Senior Librarian (Reference) within the Reference Services Unit. The References Services Unit provides reference and instructional services to a diverse public and selects, creates, manages, and assesses information or research resources, tools and services. Under the direction of the Associate Librarian (Reference), the Senior Librarian (Reference) will serve as the Law Librarian and will be responsible for performing a variety of duties related to the NYSL print, microfilm and online law collections. Other duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Serve as the Law and Legislative history specialist;
• Provide reference and information services in all subjects to a diverse public onsite, by telephone and via e-mail;
• Provide complex and in-depth research results for law inquiries using print, microfilm, and online legal resources;
• Develop the NYSL law collections through identification and suggestion of materials in a variety of formats available for purchase;
• Collaborate with other NYSL staff to resolve problems related to the collection maintenance of law materials, including issues related to location and classification;
• Create and facilitate the use NYSL online and print instructional materials, tutorials, bibliographies, and subject-related research guides within the area of law and legislative history;
• Support the effective use of NYSL print, microfilm and online law collection materials by providing training and bibliographic instruction to the general public and NYSL staff via in-person or online platforms on an individual or group basis;
• Serve as liaison to and maintain contact with both the New York State Unified Court System and New York State Department of Law; and
• Complete tasks related to the proactive promotion of NYSL law resources and research services to the legal community, courts, New York State agencies, and the general public within New York State via activities such as creation of online handouts and maintenance of contact with other New York State agencies and legal groups.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent or provisional appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position requires participation in a rotating Saturday work schedule.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $71,412 with annual performance advances.
