Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
§70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-16 or above deemed eligible to transfer under §70.1 AND be licensed and currently registered to practice as an Occupational Therapist in New York State.
Eligible List Appointment: Candidates who are reachable on the Senior Occupational Therapist eligible list may be considered for appointment.
The Senior Occupational Therapist is a continuous recruitment examination. To qualify for the examination, you must be licensed and currently registered to practice as an Occupational Therapist in New York State AND have one year of post licensure occupational therapy experience. Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Blind in Batavia is seeking applicants to fill a Senior Occupational Therapist position. Under the supervision of the Head of Department (Related Services), the incumbent of this position will perform a variety of duties to assist in providing prescribed therapeutic treatment and training to students who are multiply disabled and legally blind, and will function as an advanced clinician. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Select, administer, score performance evaluations and assessments, and interpret test results of students to determine present level of functioning in performing the activities of daily living, strength and dexterity, gross and fine motor skills, interpersonal relations, communication, memory, coordination, and perceptual and problem solving skills;
• Assist therapists in working with students, both individually and in small groups, providing therapy or instruction in the use of arts and crafts materials, tools, simple machinery and other devices to improve fine-motor skills and coordination and to develop basic life skills;
• Select and instruct activities that will help students learn work- and life-management skills consistent with their needs and capabilities in order to improve students’ decision making, abstract reasoning, memory, sequencing, coordination and perceptual skills;
• Determine the need for, design, adapt, and fabricate adaptive equipment and other aids to improve functional skills and abilities;
• Attend periodic meetings with other treatment team staff, families, and caregivers to discuss students’ progress;
• Record prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in charts or computer database;
• Complete required Medicaid documentation; and
• Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs).
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at candidate’s expense. This will be a permanent, 12-month position. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit.
