Minimum Qualifications New York State employee with current permanent/contingent-permanent competitive service as a Public Health Nutritionist 2 (G-24); OR a New York State employee with one year or more of permanent/contingent-permanent competitive service as a Public Health Nutritionist 1 (G-22) and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the NYS Civil Service Law.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidates must be able to work independently and handle multiple priorities. Candidates with professional work and supervisory experience in a large, multi-faceted public health nutrition program with excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills, and knowledge of child and maternal nutrition are preferred.
Duties Description The Bureau of Supplemental Food Programs (BSFP) is currently recruiting to fill four (4) Public Health Nutritionist 2 (PHN2) positions. BSFP administers the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which provides breastfeeding support, nutrition counseling, health education, health care referrals, referrals to other services, and nutritious foods to approximately 450,000 women, infants and children each month through 92 local providers (hospitals, local health departments and community based organizations) at 400 service sites. The fundamental purpose of the program is to ensure the health and well-being of income eligible families and young children. WIC provides individually tailored food prescriptions issued to each participant for specific types and brands of foods that meet strict nutrition requirements. These food benefits, valued at over $400 million annually, can be redeemed at more than 3,200 authorized retail food vendors across the state.
PHN 2s are responsible for interpreting federal regulations governing the WIC program; developing and revising program policies, procedures, work plans, training materials, and technical assistance documents; ensuring program activities are carried out in accordance with USDA guidelines and requirements; overseeing and contributing to the implementation of objectives related to nutrition and other health services, breastfeeding, outreach, food packages, and retail food delivery systems set forth in the annual State Plan; collaborating with stakeholders on related initiatives; monitoring and analyzing contractor and program performance; and participating in long and short term program planning related to the implementation of the new Management Information System (NYWIC) and electronic benefit transfer (e-WIC). The incumbent will supervise public health nutritionists, health program administrators, and temporary staff in carrying out these duties.
Additional Comments Contingent-permanent, full-time. Occasional statewide travel, including overnights and travel to areas that may not be served by public transportation may be required.
