Minimum Qualifications Vocational Instructor 1/SG-12
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority;
2. OR an associate's degree in a related trade area and two years of experience;
3. OR a bachelor's degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.
Vocational Instructor 2/SG-13
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate experience and minimum of 12 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills;
2. OR an associate's degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills AND two years of related trade experience;
3. OR a bachelor's degree in any area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills; AND one year of related trade experience.
Vocational Instructor 3/SG-15
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination: Initial certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.
Vocational Instructor 4/SG-17
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination: Professional certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.

Candidates for Business and Distributive Education must have a bachelor's degree and follow the New York State Education Department academic teacher certification guidelines. Candidates for Computer Technology must meet the minimum qualifications under option 2 or 3 for Vocational Instructor 1 or Vocational Instructor 2.
Duties Description Makes plans for teaching assignment consistent with and based on overall course objectives. Determines learning needs, abilities, and other relevant facts for individuals scheduled for class. May administer standard tests or observe the learners ability to use tools, machines or other equipment to assess learners abilities and development. Utilizes an approved standard syllabus. Prepares daily or weekly lesson plan. Conducts or supervises the class session using daily lesson plan. Evaluates learners performance and progress in the class. May supervise other in the instruction of learners. May speak or participate in panel discussions. May attend training seminars, conferences and workshops. May perform some of the administrative tasks of Education Supervisor.
