Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist (G14)- Bachelor’s degree in in Chemical or Biological Sciences or a related field and one year of post-degree professional experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Research Scientist 1 (G18) – Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Biological Sciences or a related field and two years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a master’s degree in Chemical or Biological Sciences or a related field and one year of post-degree experience in the appropriate field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.
Research Scientist 2 (G22) – Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Biological Sciences or a related field and three years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a master’s degree in Chemical or Biological Sciences or a related field and two years of post-degree experience in the appropriate field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience that includes the use of mass spectrometry (MS) in the analysis of environmental samples for organic compounds. Experience working in an ELAP-approved testing laboratory. Familarity with human sample testing procedures and able to operate and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation based on gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) with MS detection.
Duties Description The Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry is responsible for the routine analysis of environmental and biological samples using US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) approved methodology and for the development of new analytical methods for specific target compounds suspected to be associated with public health problems. The laboratory’s expertise is being developed to achieve the specificity and sensitivity required to identify and quantitate trace chemical compounds in water and blood samples. The incumbents will perform routine laboratory operations, will develop analytical methods for assessment of public health effects and will perform routine analysis of organic chemicals. Analysis will be conducted primarily by GC, LC, MS and tandem MS techniques. The incumbent of the position may also be required to receive and evaluate proficiency test samples (PT) as well as assist in sample analysis of environmental, biological, or human specimens resulting from accidents or emergencies submitted to the Wadsworth Center Laboratory.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position, satisfactory background checks may also be required.
