Minimum Qualifications VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 1/SG-12
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority;
2. OR An associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience;
3. OR A bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.

VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 2/SG-13
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 12 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills;
2. OR An associate’s degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills; and two years of related trade experience;
3. OR A bachelor’s degree in any area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. Duties Description You would teach trades and skills to residents and/or inmates of institutions/facilities. Your duties would include the preparation of lesson plans, course outlines, trade analyses, and may include shop layout planning, the establishment of shop safety programs, and the maintenance of tools and equipment. You would be expected to manage a classroom environment appropriately. You would be responsible for meeting each learner's individual needs and evaluating their progress as part of your record keeping duties. You may need to utilize technology as part of your instruction to enhance the educational setting.
