Duties Description The New York State Common Retirement Fund (“CRF”), as established by Article 9 of the New York Retirement and Social Security Law (“RSSL”), holds and invests the assets of the New York State and Local Employees' Retirement System and the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System (collectively, the "System"). The major purpose of the Fund is to provide a combined overall investment program for the System. As of March 31, 2016 the total assets of the Fund were $183.5 billion.

With the support of the Chief Investment Officer for Pension Investment and Cash Management (“PICM”) within the Office of the State Comptroller (“OSC”) and the General Counsel to the Comptroller and their professional staffs; and CRF’s outside counsel, consultants, and advisory committees, the Comptroller determines policies and manages the investment operations of the System. PICM manages the assets of the Fund on a day-to-day basis and is looking to fill the following position within PICM’s Corporate Governance Unit:

The Corporate Governance Officer is responsible for the continued development and implementation of the corporate governance program within Pension Investment and Cash Management (PICM). This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:

Duties:

• Deliver presentations and other materials that analyze/highlight the Fund’s ESG initiatives.
• Prepare client-ready supplemental analyses, reports and memoranda and Fact Sheets for diverse audiences on ESG issues with little oversight and with attention to detail.

• Assist a Director in developing CRF’s approach to managing proxy policies for an expanded universe of portfolio companies including small- and mid-cap domestic and international companies.

• Support deal teams with integrating ESG assessments into their investment diligence and recommendations using the Fund’s proprietary tools, as well as data and information from external providers.

• Assist in monitoring the Fund’s external managers to ensure compliance with ESG and sustainability best practices.

• Manage complex stake holder relationships.


• Assist in coordinating and implementing the Corporate Governance unit’s work plan, projects and initiatives.

Additional Comments Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in social sciences, law, business, economics, accounting or a closely related field.
• Advanced degree a plus.
• At least 4 years of professional asset management and/or corporate governance/ESG experience.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, detail-oriented working style and ability to handle cross-functional, complex projects.
• Demonstrates a strong ability to work within MS Excel spreadsheets, to include creating charts/graphs and an advanced capacity to produce MS PowerPoint presentations.
• Knowledge of core investment concepts, strategies, and asset classes.
• Strong knowledge of and commitment to sustainability and ESG as core tenets of investing.

• High degree of independence, self-direction, and time management ability.
• Position based in New York City.
