To qualify for this position, you MUST meet the following requirements:

You must be licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State and have a bachelor's degree in nursing OR present a notarized letter from the registrar as proof of status as a matriculated senior in a baccalaureate nursing program (you must obtain your degree within one year of the date of appointment or action will be taken to remove you from the position), AND have two years of full-time post-RN licensure clinical nursing experience with individuals, at least 50% of whom have been diagnosed with mental illness, alcoholism, or chemical dependency; OR a master's degree or doctorate in nursing and one year of full-time post-RN licensure clinical nursing experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency with and current practice of medical nursing
procedures (e.g., monitoring vital signs, ECGs, phlebotomy,
monitoring and starting IV drips, assessing patients on telemetry,
etc.).
• Ability to perform nursing physical examinations, neurological
examinations, mental status examination.
• Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification.
• Experience with clinical research protocols (especially as related
to CNS clinical trials) will be a definite plus. Candidates with no
such experience will be considered but should be willing to
undergo significant training in this area.
• Leadership experience including policy development and/or
oversight.

Duties Description This newly established Nurse 3 (Psych) position will be assigned to NKI’s Clinical Research Division (CRD) where he/she will perform nursing assessments and procedures for participants enrolled in clinical research studies. The incumbent for this position will carry out medical assessments and procedures in accordance with approved research protocols, and will provide training and supervision of staff in the conduct of medical nursing procedures. The incumbent will also be expected to play an integral role in the Institute’s employee health program, ensuring compliance with immunization and testing requirements.

Typical duties of the Nurse 3 (Psych) in the context of the CRD would include, but not be limited to:

• Direct medical supervision of research participants under the
direction of CRD physicians.
• Physical and neurological examinations of participants in
research protocols.
• Monitoring vital signs for study participants.
• Acquiring electrocardiograms and performing phlebotomy for
study participants.
• Starting and monitoring IV drips for study participants.
• Psychiatric safety assessments.
• Training and supervision of research staff in the conduct of
medical nursing procedures.
• Acting as a consultant and resource person to research teams.
• Development of departmental medical safety and monitoring
standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Ensuring CRD compliance with institutional/departmental SOPs.
• Providing medical support for NKI employee immunization and
medical testing requirements.

Notes:

1. If you fail to maintain your license and/or registration once you are appointed, action will be taken to remove you from the position.

2. In order to be eligible for appointment and to maintain employment, you cannot be listed as an excluded individual or entity on any of the Federal and/or State Medicaid and Medicare exclusion lists (or excluded from any other Federal or Federally assisted program). If you are appointed and subsequently listed as an excluded individual or entity on any of these lists (or excluded from any other Federal or federally assisted program), you may be terminated from your employment.

3. If appointed you may be required to become an enrolled Medicare provider; obtain and provide to your employer a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number issued by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES); and otherwise actively participate to the degree necessary to allow for your services to be billed through Medicare and Medicaid. If you are appointed and you lose the ability to bill through Medicare and Medicaid, you may be terminated from your employment.

Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review:
Prospective appointees will be:

1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable.

2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC) which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees.

3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.

Additional Comments:
The posted hiring rate is the sum of the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 20 ($61,496), an Increased Hiring Salary ($3,471), Downstate Adjustment of ($3,026), and a Geographic Pay Differential ($12,871). The posted job rate is the sum of the statutory job rate ($78,014), Downstate Adjustment of ($3,026), Geographic Pay Differential ($12,871).

Additional compensation may apply based on shift assignment.

This is a day shift position, work hours to be determined. No holidays. An occasional Sat/Sun commitment may be possible.
