Minimum Qualifications 1. Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany, land surveying, and forest biology, OR

2. One (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Duties Description The position’s duties involve fieldwork collecting forest inventory data and computer mapping of State Forests and DEC lands in Cattaraugus County. Data will be collected using Field Data Recorders with GPS capability and ArcGIS. Existing skill and coursework with GIS will be a significant benefit however, some additional on–the-job training is usually necessary.

• Use ArcGIS to establish points on forest stands to be inventoried and upload point location data on an Allegro or Trimble
Juno Field Data Recorder.
• Locate specific forest stands in the field and individual inventory points using maps and the Field Data Recorder with GPS.
• Conduct inventory at each point by using either a wedge prism or angle gauge for basal area determinations. Enter data
into the Field Data Recorder. Data collected will include tree species, DBH, merchantable height, percent cull
determinations and regeneration.
• Collect additional data about each site as determined by the Senior Forester.
• Digitize forest stand maps on a computer using ArcGIS.

• Basic knowledge of ArcGIS or similar mapping programs.
• Skill in using and understanding maps, GPS and digital cameras to assist in locating and recording inventory points and stand
data.
• Ability to identify tree species commonly found in New York.
• Physical ability to hike across varied terrain daily and in all weather conditions.
• Ability to interact well with the public and provide accurate information about stand conditions to other forestry staff.

Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment, or demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
